# Shutting off Valves

Shutting off water valves is a straightforward process, but it's important to do it carefully. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

### **1. Locate the Valves:**

- **Main Water Shut-off Valve**: This is usually found near where the water line enters your home, often in the basement, crawl space, or outside.
- **Individual Fixture Valves**: These are typically located under sinks or behind toilets.

### **2. Identify the Type of Valve:**

- **Gate Valve**: This valve has a round wheel handle. Turn it clockwise (right) to close.
- **Ball Valve**: This has a lever handle. Turn the lever perpendicular (90 degrees) to the pipe to close.

### **3. Turn Off the Valve:**

- For gate valves, turn the handle clockwise until it stops.
- For ball valves, simply turn the lever to a 90-degree angle.

### **4. Test the Water Flow:**

- Open a faucet in your home to ensure the water has stopped flowing.
