# Dishwasher Not Draining

If your dishwasher isn’t draining properly, here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow:

1. **Check the Drain Filter**:
   - Remove the bottom dish rack and locate the drain filter. Clean out any debris, food particles, or buildup that may be blocking it.
2. **Inspect the Drain Hose**:
   - Make sure the drain hose is not kinked, clogged, or damaged. It should be positioned correctly and free of obstructions.
3. **Check the Air Gap** (if applicable):
   - If your dishwasher has an air gap (a small device mounted on the sink), remove the cover and clean any debris inside.
4. **Run a Cycle**:
   - Sometimes, running a short cycle can help clear minor clogs. Make sure to check if the problem persists afterward.
5. **Examine the Garbage Disposal**:
   - If your dishwasher is connected to a garbage disposal, check to see if it’s clogged. Running the disposal can sometimes resolve the issue.
6. **Check the Drain Valve**:
   - Ensure the drain valve is functioning properly. If it's stuck closed, the water won't drain. You may need to manually test it or consult a professional.
7. **Look for Blockages**:
   - Check for any blockages in the sump area of the dishwasher, which can prevent drainage.
8. **Inspect the Pump**:
   - If you’re comfortable, check the drain pump for any obstructions. Listen for unusual noises when the dishwasher attempts to drain, as this could indicate a pump issue.
9. **Run Hot Water**:
   - Before starting the dishwasher, run the hot water in your kitchen sink for a few minutes to ensure that hot water is flowing into the dishwasher.
